Plastic Storage Containers: All You Need to Know

Productivity is the key to the successful running of any busy workplace, but to be productive, you also need to be organised.

One of the best ways to stay organised, especially if you have limited space, is to invest in some adequate storage containers. But how do you find the right storage containers for your needs?

Things to consider:

How big is the item you need to store?

Your storage container of choice needs to be the correct size for storing your items safely. Make sure the lid fits securely when the container is full.

Are there any special requirements for the item you need to store?

Does the item need to be kept away from UV light, which might discolour it or damage it? Does it need to be kept in a ventilated container or a solid container with a lid to keep moisture out?

Does the item need to be visible and do you need easy access to it?

It can make your life easier to have a clear storage container so you can see what’s inside so you don’t have to spend time digging around for what you need. If you need to access items quickly you could also consider colour coding the boxes.

Do you need stackable containers?

These are a godsend when you don’t have a lot of space in your workplace. They are also good for making the most of van space when you need to ship goods. Many stackable boxes can be nested when not in use.

Things you might not realise about plastic boxes

Not all plastic boxes will protect your goods from sunlight

Items like paperwork, magazines, and clothing can be discoloured by the sun. Transparent boxes will allow you to easily see what’s in the box, but they won’t protect the items from sunlight. For any items that might fade, keep them in a solid colour storage container.

Plastic storage boxes can be affected by temperature

Most containers will have a recommended temperature range. If they are used where it is too cold, they can become brittle, and if they are kept where it is too hot, they can become distorted.

Some storage boxes are stronger than others

Some boxes are specially designed to carry heavy loads like tools, and are used for jobs like removals. Features like reinforced corners make them ideal for this job.

Size matters!

So what size container should you opt for? Here’s a rough guide to storage containers and their capacity:

Small container: Around 9 litres, can hold 2 reams of A4 paper.

Medium container: Around 35 litres, can hold 4 A4 box files

Large: 64 litres, can hold 8 A4 box files
