They basically have the same function as a pallet truck but the main difference is that pallet trucks can go into the pallet and lift the load, whereas with a dolly, the load has to be placed on it. This might seem like a disadvantage, but it depends on what your business needs. In some cases, a pallet dolly would be more suitable than a pallet truck, for example:
- If employees are working in an area or environment in which there is very little room to manoeuvre, never mind fit a pallet truck. Say your employees are accepting a goods delivery from a small vehicle or from a van where goods have been tightly packed to make the best use of every bit of space. There wouldn’t be room to use a pallet truck, but the load would still need to be positioned so that a forklift can unload the goods. A dolly is the perfect way to do this while still reducing employee effort.
- Where speed is of the essence. You could argue that speed is important in any business to achieve productivity, but in some businesses, for example, car manufacturing, every single process is timed to perfection to achieve maximum quality and output. In this type of business, the pallet dolly can be loaded on the ground ready to be moved and there would be no need to wait for a pallet truck to become available.
- Where budget is a concern. Pallet dollies are far simpler pieces of equipment than pallet trucks, so they need less maintenance and there’s generally less potential for something to go wrong or fail.
